This month we can let you know about who's re-opening, who's delivering, classes and courses you can find online, as well as coupon codes, new articles and introducing the fabulous new members of the directory. Now is an even more important time to support local producers and providers, and if you receive a wonderful service hopefully you will continue using them after the crisis passes.

The Cheltenham Noticeboard Facebook group has reached a membership of 19,700 people! Thank you to our moderators who are helping keep it running smoothly. We tweaked our joining questions to ensure everyone is on board with the motto of KINDNESS.

If you're a member of the group, please note that at weekends you must use existing threads as we're spending time with our families and only checking in to the pending posts dashboard about once a day. Often we're getting 30 or more new posts an hour to approve or decline so it really helps when people add to existing posts of the relevant subject rather than starting new ones.

Blooming Marvellous!

The Hive has Rebranded as Bloom Studio & Wellbeing

Jo and Chelsea have taken a big step in letting go of The Hive name / brand and have used this time to think about how the cafe and studio can be successful moving forwards.

Bloom was born from a dream to create a welcoming space that helps people feel good in their bodies and minds. It is built on the idea that community and a feeling of belonging can be one of the most powerful ways to improve our health.

It has been brought to life during the UK's lockdown in 2020, with well-being proving even more important due to the impact on people during COVID-19 restrictions.

Previously 'The Hive', mother and daughter team Jo and Chelsea Baker took over the building in January 2020. A complete family affair with Chelsea's partner Ben who will be running the cafe bar downstairs (coming soon). We all work closely together to nurture and develop the family business whilst supporting each other each step of the way.

Bloom is a truly beautiful destination. Its spacious and light studio is a very special place to enjoy classes, workshops and events, and its purpose built treatment room is of the highest quality and a serene place to enjoy the holistic treatments on offer.

Our friendly team of teachers, therapists, students, clients and visitors make Bloom what it is. We look forward to meeting you soon and growing together.’

The cafe downstairs will eventually be The Urban Meadow but this is still a work in progress… will keep you updated! Our treatment room will continue to operate as and when we are allowed to reopen.

Our website is www.bloom-cheltenham.co.uk where you can book onto our current timetable, where there are lots of FREE offerings from various teachings in yoga for adults and teens, meditation, barre and dance.

Frances Bennett has released a single - Time Stood Still - with ALL proceeds from sales going to Mental Health Foundation. She sent us this and asked us to share it with you:

'By downloading my song, you are contributing toward an important cause, all the more crucial during times like these with millions at home. Thank you in advance for supporting my song and Mental Health Foundation.'

The Salisbury Poisonings

BBC Iplayer. 3 Part series.

When Yulia and Sergei Skripal are poisoned by a Novichok nerve agent, the resulting investigation and the attempts to prevent massive loss of life by everyday heroes are brilliantly portrayed in this drama. Based on the true story of the events that took place back in March 2018 in Salisbury. Anne-Marie Duff and Race Spall lead a very impressive cast. Highly recommended!

Little Fires Everywhere

Amazon Prime (Free to View) 8 Part series.

Binged! Absolutely binged this! Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington star in this adaptation of the book by Celeste Ng. The unravelling of the characters and their lives is so fascinating and brilliantly done, the cast is strong throughout, and it touches on a lot of really interesting, problematic situations. I am strangely left hoping that they don't squeeze a second series out of it - sometimes it's just best to leave things alone... did I learn that from viewing this series?!?

Alan Bennett's Talking Heads

BBC iPlayer 12 parts.

A remake of these classic monologues from the master. Sarah Lancashire, Martin Freeman and Jodie Comer are just some of the stars to take part.

Murder In The Outback

Channel 4 4 Parts.

Pete Falconio, a British backpacker went missing in 2001 while on holiday with his girlfriend Joanne Lees. Joanne was the only witness and this series sets about re-examining the evidence, which is, frankly, mostly her narrative. The only evidence used to convict Bradley Murdoch was a small sample of DNA, but it was sufficient to put him in prison for Pete's murder and the assault of Joanne. It is a really gripping story, the press were less than sympathetic to Joanne - and it has to be said that her testimony is deeply sketchy! By the final episode, I was convinced I knew what the revelation would be, who'd done it, whole scenario clear in my head - but no! It was one of those bloody programmes that has no resolution. Nothing. Nada. It just finished. Four hours of my life I will never get back. Thanks Channel 4.

New Group Moderation Team Member!

Over recent weeks it has become apparent that we need to represent our multicultural ethics on which the group was founded, and we didn't have anyone from the Black or Asian community represented in the moderation group.

Regina Doh from Teenage Survival Guide and Edufun CIC has kindly agreed to be on our team, however she works for the NHS as well as being a teacher... a very busy and kind woman... so she is going to be on hand to consult more than actively moderating the group.

Thank you to everyone who has helped keep the discussion respectful during the last few weeks. We appreciate your support in keeping it all running smoothly. x

#ForgottenLtd is asking for parity.

We are asking not to be forgotten.

To get involved in the campaign join the Facebook group.

Visit our website at www.forgottenltd.com

Follow us on Twitter.

Please get involved and make your voice heard.

We are asking not to be forgotten.

#ForgottenLtd is a grass roots campaign calling for the fair and equal support for small business owners, left vastly unsupported by the government support schemes launched in response to CoVid19 and the lockdown. Small limited companies do not qualify for any meaningful government support and taking on debt is not a solution.

What are we campaigning for?

We are calling on the government to:

  1. Protect our incomes by giving us financial parity equivalent to that paid by the self employed capped at £2500

  2. Allow furloughed directors to continue to work No one should be forced to abandon their businesses, We need to be in the strongest position possible to emerge from this crisis intact and to play our part in the countryʼs economic recovery

  3. Extend Business Support Grants to all small businesses We need support now to save and sustain our businesses

  4. Demonstrate a plan for the sustainable future of small businesses - we need clear guidance on what the exit strategy ʻcouldʼ look like and how small businesses can aim for a return to some semblance of ʻnormalʼ - while existing support packages must be extended, we need support now and to get through the inevitable recovery process.

Annie's Apps

My sister Annie seems to have a never ending supply of useful apps to tell me about, so I thought I'd start a feature sharing her app recommendations. Last month we had Strava and this month's is 'Flight Tracker'. Annie can point her phone at the sky and tell me exactly where that plane is flying to, where it's from and what it's carrying.

'The world's most popular flight tracker. Track planes in real-time on our flight tracker map and get up-to-date flight status & airport information.'

Cocktail of the Month

with Liberty Deacon

For two...

100ml tequila

50 ml triple sec

50 ml sugar syrup

2 x fresh limes (juice only, rind would be rank)

8 cubes of ice

Blend, just a hand blender is fine. Salt round the rim.

Heaven in a glass!

Terrible Art in Charity Shops

I'm in a Facebook group of the above name. The thing is, some of the art is so terrible or so bizarre that it can appear wonderful! I can't reproduce any of the images here - what goes on Terrible Art stays on Terrible Art - so I've found some alternative examples online. Must be every artist's nightmare to see one of their pieces turning up here. I think I have some in my A Level portfolio that would qualify.

Where Are You Really From?

Do you remember this? A selection of people get DNA tested and it makes them think again about their heritage.

Mark and I did a DNA test when our friend Tim treated us to them and it turned out that my heritage is mixed and Mark's was 100% Sri Lankan.

I'm 39.5% English, 31% Scandinavian, 15.7% Irish, Scottish and Welsh, 9.3% Balkan, 3.3% Greek and 1.2% Nigerian. How about you?!

On Privilege

Dom Gittins made a video with his thoughts on what it means to be privileged in the UK in 2020. On his YouTube he has added the caption: 'These are only words, and words are lovely, but mean little without action.'

It was sent to me by a black female friend, who said: 'We need more white people working with the BAME community to make change happen. It is about listening and learning the process will take time. We need to keep on communicating and move forward. My friends are finding it hard because they feel that they are not racist and I am bringing to light about how their privilege is very different to mine. The times are a changing, we all have to work at it.'

Getting Things Done

Rachael Willoughby

I don't know about you but I have good intentions to get through my to do list every day, but more often than not it doesn't happen!

However I have noticed that if I do these three things I definitely get more work done.

1. Switch off my email...

It's very tempting when you see that notification come in to stop what you are doing and read your email... next thing you know you are totally off track. Make a point of switching off your email and checking it only twice a day. If you want you can set an auto responder telling people that you will get back to them in a few hours.

2. Switch off my social media...

Again that little notification symbol can take you off track. I use an app called Self Control which allows me to block certain sites for a period of time.

3. Leave my phone in a different room...

We have so many different ways of communicating on a phone nowadays; WhatsApp, Messenger, FB, email etc that your phone could well be pinging all day... either switch off all notifications or simply leave it in a room where you can't hear it.

I'd love to hear your productivity tips.

Here's to a productive day!

Rachael runs The Business Network Hub.

Unlocking - Do You Have The Fear?

As July arrives we will see the easing of lockdown on a fairly major scale. Our 'non-essential' shops have re-opened, pubs and restaurants will join them from July 10th, and although social distancing is still being urged, I wonder how possible that is going to be in a large number of scenarios. I have the fear.

Following a cheeky heart attack in March, I have spent the last 3+ months shielding. With add-ons. I have seen people I probably shouldn't have done, I have treated myself to two ridiculously exciting trips to The Pleasure Dome (Waitrose), but mostly I have hunkered down, let my family do the supermarket sweeps, and avoided any gatherings. I have not missed 'normal life' and think that actually my natural state is a little bit hermit-like.

Truth be told, I have really enjoyed lockdown. I have not enjoyed watching my friends and loved ones struggling with the very real downside to the pandemic. Job losses, uni closures, businesses folding and so many people really struggling to make ends meet. The toll on mental health has been real also.

The prospect of our new found freedom is filling me with... I'm not sure how to describe it! Fear? Anxiety? Trepidation? Maybe a mix of all of three, but there is a definite sense of discomfort that we are being herded back into normality by the need to get the economy up and running again, rather than for the good of our health. We are seeing mass gatherings on beaches, in parks, and on the streets. I don't want to play!

Some lovely things have come out of this strange time, and I truly hope that we don't forget them. Small businesses who have made inspired changes to the way they work in order to keep us supplied. The joy of a sneaky take-out when the boredom of my own cooking has been real. The pleasure of a box of goodies arriving at the door from a local farm. Forgetting (just a little bit) how to drive. The usual became the unusual and the unusual became the norm.

Katie's Review for Ronnie's Field

Local business owner Katie Dobson of Mutha Scrubber went down to Ronnie's Field with her daughter and here's the review she did of it...

'What a lovely place Ronnie’s Field is!!! It’s a private, totally secure field that you hire by the hour to walk your doggies. There are ball throwers and balls to borrow, biodegrade poo bags & eco friendly poo-tanks, picnic benches, tyre swings, lovely views, a fairy forest with REAL fairies and Jen even left a printed out Nature Trail for us to do.

Because there were no other people we were able to meet Mum & Tony there too. They have a little rescue dog who doesn’t go off the lead much and she loved mooching around with Mr Barker.

Liberty has already said she wants to go back with a picnic and a friend to play with... I totally concur... I’ll take a can of G&T and a friend to play with too!
