TEWKESBURY MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL

9 & 10 JULY 2022

Europe's largest annual medieval reenactment. Every second full weekend in July. Free Admission (parking charge £10 per vehicle). There's an event page on Facebook.

General enquiries: info@tewkesburymedievalfestival.org

Tewkesbury Medieval Festival has been the high spot of Tewkesbury’s summer since 1983. It is now widely regarded as the largest free medieval gathering of its kind in Europe, attracting re-enactors, traders, entertainers and visitors from all over the world. Its central feature is a spectacular re-enactment of the Battle of Tewkesbury on part of the site of the original battle of 1471. Many of the participants including partners and children live as a medieval army in authentic encampments for the whole weekend.

It also features a wide range of period entertainment, including music, dance and drama as well as collection of fascinating characters from the past. These may include surgeons, preachers and even the odd dragon keeper. There is a children’s activity area, with period based arts and craft sessions, and an exhibition tent with displays from organisations specialising in various aspects of history.

Our busy and colourful medieval market has everything from a suit of armour or a fabulous gown, to pot of herbs or bag of sweets on sale. There are also associated events in the town, which is decorated with authentic medieval banners for the festival period. Food and drink (including ale specially brewed for the occasion) are widely available and best of all, despite its size and popularity, entry to Tewkesbury Medieval Festival is FREE, and its hard working volunteer directors are determined to keep it that way. There is a charge for parking to help pay for our considerable costs. The festival always takes place on the second FULL weekend in July.

Note from Cheltenham Noticeboard to Festival Visitors - DO NOT LEAVE DOGS IN CARS. Be aware there will be noisy cannons firing and reenactors shouting during battle. Dogs may be better at home in the cool and calm although they are allowed at the festival if you want to take them along. The battlefield is separate from the medieval market :)

WHAT WE'RE DOING & WHY

We've all been hit by the pandemic in some kind of way; not being able to see family, friends and enjoy each other's company has been difficult for us all. Here at Walls Club we have decided to make it into something of our own that's bigger and better, certainly like never before. We have multiplied the fun, taken the acts and entertainment to a whole new level and amped up the amount of local businesses and partnerships joining us ready to present to you TWO Fantastic Family fun filled days for everyone of all ages to enjoy. Our aim is to bring everyone together again in a safe environment and provide Gloucester with the biggest Family and Music event it's ever seen, as well as raising money for local charities.

SUPPORTING LOCAL CHARITIES

The Summer Series is very much a charity and community orientated event. Our three highlighted charities are National Star College, The Pied Piper Appeal and Increase The Peace. Three fantastic local charities who all do such fantastic jobs supporting children and families in Gloucester. The work they do is very close to our hearts here at Walls and we are honoured to be supporting them after what has been a tough time for us all.

We have also involved other charities this year by donating tickets to families in need. We want everyone to feel included and have the option to come celebrate the summer with us. What's more, we are awarding Gloucester and Cheltenham Royal Hospital, as well as other surrounding hospitals in the area, free tickets for the staff to be able to take a day out with the family and have some well-earned fun. We want to show appreciation to the hard working NHS staff in Gloucester and those in need by giving back and producing the biggest family and music event Gloucestershire has seen.

The Summer Series will consist of a main stage with brilliant live music and other entertainment throughout the day/evening alongside a funfair, inflatable activities, giant games, countless more fun activities, a food court with a wide range of offerings from local businesses, outside bars and multiple local business stalls.
