EmpowerUp

Training Workshops with Regina Doh

'I am a qualified teacher of languages turned Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP). With over fifteen years of working with children and young people from different socio-economic, religious and cultural backgrounds in different educational settings in West Africa and England, I am a keen evidence-based educator. All young people are a great source of inspiration in the work that I do. I have had the privilege to listen to young people, including my own children, talk about the challenges that they face. This has provided me with the starting point for further research into the improvement of education and wellbeing services for children and young people. I have found that all young people, regardless of their backgrounds, go through all sorts of challenges. Challenges in managing hormonal changes, peer pressure, racism, gender and sexual preferences, bullying, relationships, expectations from family, school and the society. These difficulties can have lasting negative impact on their mental health and academic performance. I have formulated these new courses in order to nurture their confidence and help them find direction, motivation, inspiration and calm.'

Teenage Survival Guide

In school, at home and in the community all young people say that adults don’t listen, they don’t trust adults, in fact some of them go as far as hating those adults who care for them. This situation can be debilitating for children and young peoples’ mental health and frustrating for parents, carers and professionals. The following worsening statistics could explain why.

In 2018, I carried out a research on teenagers’ perspectives about mental health services and found that young people are indeed experts in matters that concern them. They wanted professionals, parents and carers to involve them in decision making and in the implementation of those decisions. This could improve services for young people, empower and equip them to look after their wellbeing.

Teenage Survival Guide will empower groups of young people between the ages of 11 and 18 to create wellbeing guides and kits that work for them. Face to face and online, young people will discuss day to day challenges that they face when dealing with issues that life throws at them. Challenges such as peer pressure, detentions, bullying, exams, loss, separation, overuse of social media, relationship issues, future career, caring for loved ones, money management, drugs, alcohol, identity.

TSG will encourage participants to examine difficult emotions and their impact on their mental health. They will look at helpful tips which will help them to create wellbeing guides/kits.
